A general method is presented for evaluating environmental information in relation to its effect on the performance of ground-crawling vehicles and for mapping vehicle performance by computer methods. The suitability of the method for use with a variety of environmental inputs, as well as its general applicability to problems other than those of mobility, is indicated. Mobility is examined in terms of a driving force, an impedance and a flux, each appropriately defined in the context of ground-crawling vehicles and natural terrain. Performance is viewed as a point function of position coordinates in a mathematical field context, and statistical bases for aggregation of performance values are examined. (Author)
