The report provides factual information on the physical capability of Britain's inland and coastal waterways for carrying aggregates or other bulk freight traffic. It indicates which inland waterways are suitable, gives their dimensional specifications and discusses toll charges. Different types of barge and handling facility are described and cost estimates are given. It is shown how a reasonably accurate costing for a journey can be estimated from a formula provided that the distance and toll costs are known. For coastwise movement, various ports are selected and a network of sea routes constructed. Cost estimates are made for coastal vessel operations, port dues and pilotage. As with barges, it is shown how cost estimates for a coaster voyage can be derived from the length of the journey. (Copyright (c) Crown Copyright 1978.)
