An outline is presented of the ERS-1 program of the European Space Agency. The paper provides a summary of the objectives of the ERS-1 mission and of the capabilities of the satellite. A description is given of the payload and of some orbit characteristics. Also the ground segment and the concept chosen in order to meet the important requirement that data are to be delivered to the users within three hours, are briefly discussed here.
