The performance of automatic pilot systems during aircraft approach and landing is discussed. Emphasis is placed on the flight safety aspects and limitations of the systems under low visibility conditions. The components and operating principles of the instrument landing system (ILS) are analyzed. Examples of automatic pilot systems installed in various transport aircraft are illustrated. (Author)
