An ergonomic analysis of the driver-vehicle-system demonstrates the fact that it is possible to optimize the choice of the driving speed as soon as the driver is informed about the braking distance of his vehicle. For this purpose it is necessary to calculate the friction coefficient describing the tire-road contact while driving. The braking distance can then be displayed as functions of the velocity of the vehicle. The friction coefficient is calculated by measuring the slip of the driving wheels in relation to the actual driving torque, acceleration, and driving speed. A formula describing the relations between these parameters was developed and confirmed by driving experiments. Various possibilities of displaying the braking distance are discussed in detail.
