The different motor fuels used by road vehicles (super, gasoline, diesel oil, liquefied petrol gas,...) are defined. The different entries of energy consumption associated with the use and the manufacturing of the vehicle, as well as road construction and road maintenance are studied. The different existing methods of refining petrol are reviewed, followed by a study of the different techniques designed to adjust the qualities of motor fuels to the needs of the vehicles. The energy cost of motor fuel manufacturing is also mentioned. The different problems raised by substitution motor fuels are reviewed (alcohol, synthetical motor fuels,...).
