A controlled field experiment was conducted to evaluate the potential stress and fatigue effects of longer-combination vehicle (LCV) use under typical operating conditions. Twenty-four experienced LCV drivers drove specially equipped and loaded commercial vehicles under highly controlled experimental conditions. Three different trailer configurations were compared in the study, a single 48-ft trailer (S), a triple-trailer combination with three 28-ft trailers and connecting A-dollies (A), and a triple-trailer combination with three 28-ft trailers and self-steering super C-dollies (C). Dependent measures included the driver's perception of fatigue, driving performance, physiological responses, and mental processes important to driving safety and performance. Configurations and other task demands consistently affected lane-keeping performance, subjective workload, and fatigue/physiological state following an S/C/A pattern, where the A configuration resulted in the highest level of workload and fatigue, followed by the C configuration and the S configuration. The overall results imply that triple-trailer drivers generally would be expected to maintain a higher probability of safe operation with the super C-dolly configuration than with the standard A-dolly configuration.
