This report presents the results of a project to determine the effects of malfunctions of the electronic emission control systems (EECS) upon emissions, fuel economy and driveability and to assess the ability of the automotive service industry to properly diagnose and repair these malfunctions. Ten 1981 or 1982 model year vehicles equipped with state-of-the-art closed loop electronic emission control systems (EECS) was selected for testing. Tests performed included the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) 1975 Federal Test Procedure (FTP) and Highway Fuel Economy Test (HFET); and a steady state test and driveability test specified by the California Air Resources Board (CARB).
