The report presents representative highlights of Federal Railroad Administration-sponsored railroad safety research conducted over the seven-year period from 1981 through 1987. Included are capsule summaries of research involving railroad equipment and components, human factors, hazardous materials transport, track and components, inspection-detection and dynamic track-train interaction. Also provided is a brief description of the research facilities owned by the Federal Railroad Administration and used by it as well as the railroad industry in the conduct of research activities. Cooperative research efforts involving the Government and Industry are also characterized.
