The purpose of the symposium was to discuss with railroad, rail transit industries, and government agencies, their roles in accident investigations conducted by the National Transportation Safety Board. The symposium included presentations covering the Safety Board's mission, investigation process, including legal aspects and authorities, public hearings and depositions, and public reports and recommendations. Panel discussions with representatives from the railroads, rail transit, manufacturers, labor unions and other Government agencies also covered such subjects as parties to the investigation, inter-governmental relationships, hazardous materials, survival factors and human performance, and the role of the news media in Safety Board investigations.
