The study of aircraft behavior in a turbulent atmosphere usually covers several strongly interactive fields: non-stationary aerodynamics, structure dynamics, flight qualities and piloting. The impact of turbulence on a military aircraft flight is one of the factors that will limit its operational use, and it is essentially related to the pilot's state of fatigue and to the deterioration of platform stability. With new-generation aircraft provided with fully automated controls, direct and optimized action with respect to turbulence is designed into the aircraft. With this approach, the non-stationary aerodynamic effect introduced by turbulence must be identified and studied on models, thus making it possible to anticipate and optimize the aircraft behavior. In this respect, the IMFL (Lille Fluid Mechanics Institute) and AMD-BA (Marcel Dassault Aircraft/Breguet Aviation) closely cooperated to develop research designed to achieve the non-stationary aerodynamic characterization of military aircraft in the presence of vertical gusts (Illustration 1). This research was performed on an existing model whose other characteristics were already well known.
