Flight management systems are installed in many air carrier and business aviation aircraft for the purpose of assisting the flight crew in assuring a safe and efficient flight trajectory in accordance with the cleared flight plan. Recently the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) launched a comprehensive research and development project focused on the use of air-ground data links for integrating the operation of airborne flight management automation. Integrated operation of flight management and air traffic management (ATM) automation appears to offer benefits for airspace users and ATM service providers.
