A typical rural road, showing signs of distress, was investigated to provide alternative economical rehabilitation designs which incorporate the existing road profile. Initial assessment of the road identified uniform sections requiring various rehabilitation measures. Structural analyses were done on these sections and the initial reconstruction design. Alternative experimental rehabilitation sections were designed and constructed on the weaker part of the road. The existing road structures and the experimental sections were tested with the Heavy Vehicle Simulator. These tests confirmed the accuracy of the initial structural evaluation of all these pavement structures. A cost analysis indicated that savings on the present reconstruction as well as great potential savings on the rehabilitation design of other typical rural roads, were indeed possible.
