The main problems of spaceflight as they relate to the earliest stages of manned spaceflight and to future spaceflight are discussed. Starting with an analysis of the problems encountered in making the first flights of Vostok and Mercury spacecraft, the article goes on to examine the problems encountered in the Apollo lunar flights and in future manned flights to Mars. Particular attention is given to the division of labor between automatic equipment and human crew. (Author)
