This report documents a sample of heavy-duty truck activity data collected in California using an automated data collection device that incorporated Global Positioning System (GPS) technology. This research effort was originated by the Planning and Technical Support Division of the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and jointly supported by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and were modified for this application with support from Battelle's internal research and development program. The FHWA's objective was to describe truck travel patterns in urban and rural areas for several vehicle classes and to analyze characteristics of heavy-duty truck travel by producing speed profiles, trip patterns, and start patterns and other data summaries. The California Air Resources Board's objective was to improve the heavy-duty truck activity data that are used in forecasting on-road emissions.
