The report is an evaluation of the use of a 1179 Class LST as an Expeditionary Logistic Facility (ELF) used for off loading all ships including containerships in advanced base operations. Six alternative combination of LSTs and cranes were studied. In each combination studied, the following items were evaluated: Off loading, Modifications to LST, Port stowage, and LST operating restrictions and stability. The results of these evaluations indicate that two LSTs each equipped with one 100-foot radius crane would be the most suitable configuration for off loading containerships. (Author)
