A Spectrochemical Oil Analysis Program (SOAP) is a preventive maintenance procedure for engines and transmissions, which has had notable success in many fields. The procedure involves analysis of oil samples both by chemical means and by use of an emission spectrometer. The oil samples are extracted from the engines and/or transmissions of vehicles in operation. The report briefly describes the history of its development, the method of analysis, and its impact upon the maintenance of Naval aircraft, railroads, and buses.
