The research reported has been directed toward the development of an inflatable collar for pilots. The collar is designed to protect the head against violent rotation and against loss of consciousness during survivable crashes of aircraft. Analytical studies were conducted to determine the range of effectiveness of an airbag for use as a collar in reducing the peak deceleration of the head in a crash, to fabricate the test an inflatable airbag collar as a check on the analytical results. The goal is to arrive at the best possible design and performance criteria for such an airbag.
