The development and production of electric drive vehicles have been successful in the Federal Republic of Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, the USSR, and to a lesser degree in France, Italy, and Sweden. These vehicles are basically designed for commercial or industrial applications and, in general, a typical vehicle of this type has a maximum range of 60 to 150 miles and a maximum speed of 60 mi/h. Military applications of electric drive vehicles for transportation and combat are significant because they offer a number of advantages over more conventional drive systems.
