A transportation system can be a valuable asset or a serious handicap to an area. To provide the groundwork for a high quality transportation system, proper planning is essential. This planning includes the identification of existing and future transportation problems and culminates in transportation improvement recommendations that are consistent with the goals and objectives of area residents and elected officials. A primary responsibility of the Akron Metropolitan Area Transportation Study (AMATS) is to prepare and maintain a regional transportation plan that meets the travel needs of area residents now and in the future. This plan supports the orderly development of the region by ensuring that regionally significant transportation improvements are coordinated among local communities. It also guides local officials seeking to implement transportation improvements that utilize federal funds.
