The Institute of Transportation and Traffic Engineering of UCLA developed and tested a full scale working prototype device to present drivers with a sequence of highway signs while they perform a tracking (steering) task. One hundred and fifty-nine drivers were tested on three configurations of freeway-to-freeway interchange signing. The reactions of these drivers are considered to indicate that the Sign Tester device may be applicable to research of this particular nature. On the basis of this experience with the prototype, a final design was completed for the Sign Tester. (Author)
