Specifications for the design and testing of traction drives usually cover performance. However, dynamical load conditions also have to be considered. In particular, fault conditions of the electrical drive will cause peak torques or excitation of oscillations which may cause damage to the mechanical drive. Models of traction drives including power convertor, motor, mechanical drive and wheel rail contact have been developed to simulate the operation of the drive under fault conditions.
