The EC ATOMOS II project has investigated a human-centred, risk-based approach to the development of integrated ship control systems. The paper outlines the ATOMOS project as an example of the approach. Two proposed standards developed on the project are described. The first defines ship principles and processes for ship control centre development and operation. The second sets principles for programmable system development. An approach to assessment against these standards is presented and steps towards industrial adoption are outlined.
