A short account of research into active suspension systems for volume manufactured road vehicles is given. A possible response to difficulties with component weight, cost and power consumption is to change the conventional operating principle, so that actuation is used to vary the leverage ratio between passive force-producing elements and road wheels. Aspects of the design and performance of such systems are discussed.
