The introduction of a 42 V power rail presents a major challenge for the automotive industry. The author describes some of the technology, production and logistical problems that lie ahead. Components will have to be redesigned, production lines revamped, and parts controlled at both old and new voltages. The net result will be an inevitable increase in the cost of car manufacturing at a time when price competition is at an all-time high. The benefits of 42 V and then the problems are discussed.
