The paper introduces the concept of Project Engineering within a Railway Signalling environment. The paper addresses the background to the type of projects railway signalling engineers may find themselves implementing, a typical lifecycle for such a project, the roles and responsibilities within such a project and some of the common pitfalls encountered by Project Engineers. Typical Railway Engineering projects are not small and the safety critical nature of the systems implemented ensures that even apparently minor works cannot be undertaken lightly. The sort of works that a Signalling Project Engineer will come across in their career will vary from minor modifications, through product upgrades and renewals to major resignalling and remodelling schemes.
