On the 28 November 1994, The Mass Transit Railway Corporation (MTRC) awarded a contract to ACJV (AEG of Germany, CAF of Spain (Construccion y Auxiliares de Ferrocarriles) joint venture). This was for the delivery of 23 trains, which will be used for two new train lines in Hong Kong. Two different types of train services will be provided using the same 34 km railway. Beginning from 1998, eleven de-luxe seven car trains will run on the 'Airport Express Line'(AEL) to connect the newly built Chek Lap Kok Airport with the Hong Kong Island (Central) and Western Kowloon. While on the 'Tung Chung Line'(TCL), twelve seven-car trains will be used to run a local service between Lantau Island and Hong Kong Island. In both cases the trains will have a maximum speed of 135 km/h. This paper describes the trainset consist, traction system, electric brake design, interface to the power system, driving and braking, auxiliary supply, maintenance, and testing.
