This paper explains the contribution that intelligent traffic systems could make towards the best use and management of the existing trunk road network in England, and how such systems can play their part in supporting emerging transport policies. It is clear that if UK transport systems are to be modernised and brought up to date with the developments from the information age, the full range of tools available under the heading of intelligent transport systems will need to be deployed selectively on the network.
