The use of non-ruggedised COTS electronics can only occur for those applications where the naval shock environment is relatively benign. However, the use of ruggedised COTS electronics is set to increase, as they are able to meet naval shock environments once located in a shock mounted enclosure. It is described how the relationship between the shock impulse and the performance of the COTS electronics can be compared to determine whether the use of COTS electronics will meet the naval shock requirements.
