This paper provides an introduction to railway communication principles and requirements. This is then followed by an outline of systems that can comply with these requirements. A discussion of some of the problems associated with design, installation, integration, maintenance and eventual decommissioning of these railway systems is provided. The paper covers generic issues of communication systems within a railway environment and is illustrated and supported by examples of some of the systems in particular that are operational on London Underground. The paper concludes with a look into the future of railway communications. (17 pages)
