TELTEN is an ERTICO initiative, supported by the European Commission, that proposes a suitable framework for deploying a traffic management architecture on the Trans-European Road Network (TERN). TELTEN has worked in close co-operation with the MAGIC (traffic management) action group of the EU's Motorway Working Group. The TERN is the official road network of the European Union with a length of some 69000 kilometres, representing 2% of the total road length in the EU's 15 Member States. Most of the TERN is or will be interurban or periurban motorway and carries a high proportion of total traffic. Completion of the TERN requires an investment in excess of 120 billion ECU. The TERN stimulates consensus between Member States on common actions and dynamic co-operation. (6 pages)
