The use of positional information from a satellite network has been in use in the road vehicle sector for many years, primarily in the area of fleet management. The use of positional information in road user charging (RUC) is a relatively new application of satellite based technology. This paper describes the design, testing and operational aspects of a RUC system utilising satellite positional information and concludes with some general comments on the future of this technology in the area of road user charging.
