We are used to seeing comparisons between road and rail in transport debates, but air-road comparisons are much less frequent. As ground-based modes, the former compete for customers much more directly. But in terms of the industries, technologies and operational needs, the overlaps between the air and road sectors are significant and growing. The aim of this paper is to explore some of this common ground and highlight trends for the future.
