The increasing traffic density on the main lines of European railways requires sophisticated operation control systems, which provide intelligent support for the operators. Here, the author describes how, using modern software technologies (in particular expert systems), it is possible to introduce computer-aided dispatching systems for railway operator support, including automatic conflict solution-based dispatching systems.
