The Leeds public transport system uses a 'bus guideway system where feasible, but in some parts of the city it would be uneconomical or there would be too little space. For those areas there are used techniques which provide queue management to protect 'bus stops, priority through cost function minimisation using the Italian control system SPOT, and offsets more suited for 'buses. A traffic signal control strategy that synchronises the minimum value of a modulating queue length with the arrival of a 'bus will be developed. The strategy will be introduced at a congested junction that delays the Superbus on its approach to the city centre after leaving the guideway. Its aim is essentially to extend the guideway concept using ITS techniques. (3 pages)
