The 4th Framework Programme's ADEPT II project builds upon on the work of the earlier EU's (3rd Framework Programme) DRIVE Project ADEPT which addressed the design and evaluation of demand management schemes resulting from the technical development and deployment of transponders and smart-card based payment systems for road transport. ADEPT itself was regarded as a highly successful and innovative project which had six highly successful trial sites covering non-stop multi-lane tolling, road-use pricing (congestion pricing), car park management, booking and debiting and in all trials additional driver information and payment services using the same telematics equipment. In order to clearly understand the context of ADEPT II a description of some of the main achievements of the ADEPT project is given. (4 pages)
