Today, the problem of electrical energy saving in all the power systems, and therefore in railway systems too, is particularly critical because of the increasing cost of the energy itself. In this paper the authors present a general purpose methodology, based on the integrated use of a traffic simulator and an optimization code, which allows the automatic determination of the optimal energy consumption parameters in an autotransformer supplied AC railway system. The optimization methods and procedures are described and a case study is presented and discussed.
