The UK railway companies have steered the development of a new signalling system on to a branch line in the hopes that it will prove more effective than an earlier more ambitious trial. The system move from train protection warning system (TPWS) to European rail traffic management system (ERTMS), which is intended to improve railway safety and reliability, increase interoperability and cut equipment and maintenance costs. ERTMS is meant to boost railway safety by improving the control of trains.
