Airbus recently completed a major research project that is resulting in greater levels of automated drilling within the aerospace giant. As Airbus's build rate is set to increase to meet market demand, it has sought to cut levels of manual processing and bring a flexible, low-cost robotic platform into the aerospace industry. The system is already in action at the Filton plant in the UK and the company says the process is already reducing costs, cutting production time and improving quality. The Airbus team has brought together two developmental partners, KUKA and M3 to address the problem. The platform incorporates DELMIA V5 R16 robotics software and the team is applying for a patent for the process.
