Radio-based train traffic control was identified as one possible safety-relevant area where synergism from space technology and currently available avionics experience makes sense. The described GNSS-1-based train positioning platform is an enabling device to make use of telematics. It also covers various other railway applications because of its high accuracy and safety level. Within the framework of the EC DG XIII sponsored programmes, MAGNET A&B, demonstrators of the described train positioning system have been built, and these are to be tested with SNCF in 1998.
