This paper reviews the principal types of variable speed drive available today. It explains the principles of operation of each and identifies their key characteristics. The principal applications of each drive is also given. In particular, speed control, inverter drives, vector control, direct torque control drives, synchronous drives, cycloconverters, and slip-energy recovery drives are discussed. (8 pages)
