An acceleration-based target maneuver detecting algorithm is proposed for bearings-only target motion analysis (BO-TMA). Firstly, compared with the existing bearing-based detectors, the acceleration-based detector is shown to have the same maneuver burden on the observer. Secondly, the algorithm stems from the instrumental variable method and gains desirable asymptotical properties. Numerical simulations are carried out to show the algorithm works well against the bearing- based detecting algorithms (e.g., the Shiryayev sequential probablility ratio test (SSPRT)-based detector).
