The dynamics of heavy-ions during the laser acceleration of protons is theoretically studied by means of 2D particle-in-cell simulations and a 1D analytical hydrodynamic model. The heavy-ion motion is found to modify the longitudinal electric field distribution, thus changing the acceleration conditions for the protons.
