Fires occurring in metro may cause massive fatality and property damage. The metro fire engine (MFE) is powerful equipment to solve the problem of metro fire rescue. The metro fire will result in 1) its upstream trains being trapped, which may lead to casualties of passengers on these trains; 2) The interruption of train service may lead to severe urban traffic jams; then 3) the MFE dispatched will be blocked by in-service trains on the way to the fire in the tunnel. It is necessary to open a quick rescue passage for the MFE in metro tunnels, evacuate the trapped trains quickly, and maintain uninterrupted metro operation. This paper proposes the Evacuation strategy for trapped trains close to the fire, the Overtaking strategy for the MFE, and the Alternate strategy for the track parallel to the failure track. The objective is to minimize the MFE response time, evacuation time for trapped trains, and delays on other in-service trains. To characterize the processes, this paper develops mixed integer programming (MIP) models with three strategies to jointly reschedule the MFE and trains during fire rescue. Numerical experiments from Suzhou Metro Line 1 are implemented to verify the performance of the rescue strategies. The results show that the proposed model can 1) definitely open up the emergency lifeline for the MFE by jointly rescheduling the MFE and trains, 2) rapidly evacuate the trapped trains, and 3) maintain an uninterrupted operation of the metro during the rescue.
