Summary form only given. In this paper, we evaluate the influence of the repeater output power on an 8 and 4/spl times/2.5 Gbit/s transmission for link lengths ranging from 6000-15000 km. In particular, an 8/spl times/2.5 Gbit/s transmission over 12000 km with a 75-km amplifier spacing has been achieved with a bit error rate (BER) lower than 10/sup -10/.
