More and more cities are committed to traffic calming, but such measures often face social resistance by car users. Therefore, it is essential to understand the causes that affect car use. This study investigates the factors influencing passenger car use including access to public transportation, household size, commuting, parking availability, bikeability, status symbol, and income. For testing, an online questionnaire was conducted in Hungary, and the Pearson Chi-square (χ²) test was applied. It was found that the most influential factors were the access to high-quality public transportation, parking availability at home, and the income. Moreover, people who drive their children to school commute less frequently to work by car. Accordingly, encouraging individual transport of students through school streets and bike bus programs, and the support of public transportation were the identified practical measures.
