Waveguide photodiodes offer two advantages compared with conventional surface illuminated photodiodes: they are suitable for surface mounting to make low-cost optical modules, and they have a high quantum efficiency with a fast response. In this report, we describe the design and fabrication of waveguide photodiodes for both 2.5-Gbps access networks (taking advantage of the surface-mountable structure) and 80-Gbps trunk lines (using the high quantum efficiency and fast response).
