Collision warning radar is a potentially significant application of radar technology to the automotive market. In early stages of collision warning radar deployment, the likelihood of radar malfunction due to interference will be low. However, it is anticipated that as the number of fielded radars increases, systems designed without consideration of the interference problem will exhibit poor or degraded performance. Radars can be designed to minimize their susceptibility to interference. This paper focuses on what happens when many or most vehicles are equipped with a collision warning radar, and determines the level of interference expected when most vehicles employ a collision warning radar.
