A diode end-pumped, thin-rod, tunable Yb:YAG laser has been developed for CW and Q-switched operation. A wide tuning range of 51 nm for CW and 14 nm for Q-switched operation at 8 kHz was obtained. A high peak power tunable laser is very useful for materials processing applications. In addition, it can be used for efficient wavelength conversion, without the need for temperature control of the non-linear crystal.
