As the power density of electric machines increases, rotor thermal analysis becomes critical as losses caused by higher fundamental frequencies increase. The rotor often has poor thermal communication with the stator cooling medium, and therefore alternative cooling methods may be required in high power density machines to maintain safe operating temperature, especially in rotor mounted permanent magnet motors. In this paper, a review of rotor cooling methods and thermal design considerations is discussed, along with key tools used in thermal analysis of rotors for electric machines.
